SKUNK!
A skunk wandered onto the warning track during game 2 of the doubleheader in the top of the seventh inning.
Danny Perales, the LF for New Hampshire, didn't appear to notice it at first, but once he did, I had to think it was a little distracting for he and Anthony Gose, walking back and forth between left and center. At one point, Tyler Moore hit a double to left-center, scoring a runner and extending Harrisburg's lead, which they would hold.
I can't be sure if the stinky interloper affected the play one way or another. One, who can ever tell; and two, I was too busy trying to get a shot off in case somebody got sprayed (it's tough up in this blogging game) to see exactly what happened.
Thanks for the memories, Shairon Martis
Last night the Fisher Cats pre-poned a game with the Senators and played a doubleheader. Shairon Martis got the start in game one.
He pitched a 1-2-3 first inning on 13 pitches. When he struck out the 4th, 5th and 6th batters in the second I thought to myself, "he must be feeling pretty good today."
Martis walked the leadoff man in the third, and I thought "no perfecto today" and didn't think much more of it. Even though I was scoring the game, it took a quick glance at the scoreboard in left field in the 5th for me to notice the goose-egg. I almost said something, but who wants to be called a jinx, regardless of the insignificance of idle chatter. Superstition is nonsense, but there's no harm in playing along, especially if it's more about tradition than metaphysics.
Minor League Baseball doubleheaders are typically 2 seven-inning games, which unfortunately means this game will be referred to forever with a qualifier before "no-hitter."
Asterisk'd.
But it's official nonetheless.
What's especially personal to me about this game, is that it means Martis has now been involved with two of my indelible baseball memories: this no-no, and a grand slam that he gave up to Ryan Howard in 2009 that reached the right field Powerade sign in the third deck of Citizens Bank Park, about 480 feet from home plate. I was sitting in 316, between home and first, opposite the scoreboard. Never saw a home run hit as high or far before or since.
I'm getting all misty (fart noise).
So here's the final out caught shakily on video. You'll be able to ascertain from the shoddy camera work that Martis puts Kevin Howard into a 2-1 count pretty quickly. You won't be able to see the bloopy liner Howard hits to 3B Tim Pahuta to complete the historical* game. Also, you'll hear me making stupid noises, so feel free to rip me in the comments or on Twitter.
Check out the Pittsfield Colonials uniform
I went to Pittsfield in Western Mass last night to catch some independent CanAm League baseball between the Colonials and the Worcester Tornadoes.
The Colonials play in historic Wahconah Park, built in 1919 with home plate facing west. This wasn't a big deal in the early 20th century, when baseball was played with the sun high above. But when night baseball began, the batters had some trouble seeing as the sun set over the batter's eye in center field, so Wahconah Park became the home of the 20-minute "sun delay."
Instead of a sun delay, from "be careful what you wish for" department, I only got a 2 hour, 20 minute rain delay, and a game that ended after midnight with about 35 people on hand to watch the final out of the game. It was fantastic.
The Colonials have fully embraced Pittsfield's historical importance to baseball, down to their uniforms. Here, you see starting lefty T.J. Wink sporting the collared baseball jersey:
Rupp works walk which walks one in for a walkoff win
The BlueClaws went into the bottom of the seventh with a 1-1 tie, unable to generate even a moderate offensive effort to properly support Lisalberto Bonilla's gem of a complete (7inn) game and it was looking bleak after Delmarva's Ryan Palsha came in to hold the reins and quickly got two outs after giving up a leadoff double to Miguel Alvarez.
The momentum began to shift when he walked Carlos Alonso and it completely flopped on its ear when, after getting ahead in the count to slugger Jim Murphy, he plunked him to load the bases for Cameron Rupp.
Rupp got behind but worked a full count. With the runners off with the final pitch of the first game, Alvarez had only a few steps to make towards home when the pitch went shoulder high on Rupp and the BlueClaws took game one 2-1 en route to the DH sweep Tuesday night.
Pork Roll Domination at FirstEnergy Park
Pork Roll pulled off a decisive victory over Egg and Cheese last night during the second game of the BlueClaws/Shorebirds doubleheader in Lakewood last night, bringing its total wins to 18. Currently he is tied for second and 4 wins behind Cheese. This is a travesty. Luckily, there are still plenty of races to run before the 2011 season ends. Go Pork Roll!
So the San Diego Chicken is still around
It was pretty cool to see him up close. Never realized that he made noises and even talked to the little kids (and me) when they hollered at him as he walked past. He did a bunch of routines, including spending one half-inning as the BlueClaws' first base coach, which I'm surprised is legal.
During that particular routine he entertained the crowd (and the BlueClaws) by waving around PG-13 posters such as this one:
It sure was something. He also had a Shorebird plant out at third base during one warmup, and the chicken ran out to short, grabbed the ball, stuck it in his beak, and "pooped" out two baseballs from under his tail, which he tossed to the shortstop and third baseman before pantsing him. Later, three Shorebirds held him and ripped off his chicken costume, revealing a small pudgy man in yellow tights wearing a chicken mask.
It was sort of like when I found out ALF wasn't real.
Here are some other shots of the chicken. You may notice that his costume's "fur" is matted pretty badly by now. Still pretty cool to see this legendary mascot in person.
Sports Buzz segment (8/12) – Fan of many hats
I feel like I was talking out of my butt for most of the segment, but the hat-switching bit was pretty good. I should also add that my Jamestown cap still had the sticker on it, but not for stylistic purposes. I just haven't gotten around to properly setting the brim yet. Yes, I'm defensive about it.
Fans like nobody’s watching
